Sunward Park High School chess teams ready for finals

Members of both the Sunward Park High School girls and boys u-18 teams.

The Sunward Park High School chess teams say they are ready to defeat their competitors at the district championships to be held at Oosterlig Hoërskool on August 4.

The u-18 boys’ teams will be depending on their captain, Sicelo Mabe, who was joint first at district individual championships and went on to leave a mark at the provincials in Pretoria.

Mabe is positive that this is the year for Sunward to claim gold as their teams have been drilled by their coach, Terrence Chirambabare, to perfection.

The u-18 girls are not to be outdone and also boasted of being able to compete, even against boys.

The Gauteng Province bronze medalist for last year said they are aiming higher this year and won’t settle for bronze.

They also boast of being captained by Samkello Ngwane, who was voted the second best female sports athlete for the 2017 year in the Ekurhuleni South District.

Samkello, however, bemoaned the fact that save for the girls’ teams of top schools like Hoërskool Dr EG Jansen, Hoërskool Marais Viljoen High School and Hoërskool Oosterlig, chess is not being fully promoted in schools.

When asked about the success of Sunward chess teams, coach Chirambabare said its true that Sunward is destined for greater heights because the school is trying to integrate chess as a science that has an impetus to improve overall academics as chess is a game of the mind.

He is proud of the teams as they have shown their desire to be pace setters.

“The quality of chess they are playing places them in the same league with Hoërskool Waterkloof, who is offering chess as a compulsory subject,” said Chirambabare.
