‘Sweef’ scores seven tries to sink hapless Kempton

Clean pair of heels: United flyer Leon ‘Sweef’ Potgieter didn’t score one, didn’t score two, not three, not four but seven tries to lead to Kempton’s burial.

It was a case of embarrassing dominance in East Rand United’s favour as the Valke Peregrine League favourites handed Kempton Park Wolves a 116-31 dressing down at The Graveyard in Reiger Park on July 7.

It was clear early on in the Valke Peregrine League encounter that it was going to be about how big the winning margin would ultimately be rather than who would win as rampant United put the contest to bed in the first-half with a 42-point lead – securing a bonus point in the process.

The victory also solidified Stephan Nel’s men’s second position on the log behind Springs, which would see both teams enjoy a home ground advantage come semi-final time on August 4 should things remain in this manner.

Back to the try party at Reiger Park Sports Ground nicknamed The Graveyard.

United’s backline scored 12 tries led by flyer Leon ‘Sweef’ Potgieter. All of JP Fleming, kicker Cameron Rooi, who also slotted 10 conversions, and wing forward Stanley Steward, scored a pair of tries each.

Solo try scorers included Tiaan Ramat, number eight Calvin Jantjies, skipper Jonathan Botha and replacements Bakkies Bakumeni and Waylon Thompson.

The resounding win took the Reiger Park outfit to 34 points, 11 adrift of Springs, who’ve played two more games.

Quizzed on his team’s performance, Nel said: “It just shows that we can run the ball from anywhere and if the defence is weak, the guys will perform.

“If there’s one thing I didn’t like, it’s that we didn’t run our structures but that’s to be expected in this kind of game. If the defence is weak, it’s difficult to run your structures. I would’ve loved to see more structured rugby.”

To their credit, the visitors conjured up a bonus point of their own for scoring four (or more) tries – five in their case – accompanied by three conversions.

United’s number 10 Reagan Fourie added three conversions to his name as well.

The 85-point winning margin is Nel’s biggest as a United coach. The half-time score was 66-24.
