Trade union federation supports strike by SASSA workers

The Federation of Unions of South Africa (Fedusa) has stressed it fully supports the right of South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) workers to embark on an indefinite industrial action as from today.

Majority of SASSA employees  are represented by the Public Servants Association (PSA), which is an affiliate of the union federation.

The workers action comes amid confusion over the takeover of the payout by the Post Office from Cash Paymaster Services, whose contract ends in September.

According to Dennis George, Fedusa’s general secretary, in February 2018, the PSA tabled a wage increase demand on behalf of SASSA workers but SASSA failed to table any offer in response.

“SASSA workers therefore decided to go on strike after wage talks with agency reached a deadlock.

“In terms of the Constitution of the SASSA National Bargaining Forum, if parties do not conclude a collective agreement within 30 days of the matter being tabled, any party may declare a dispute,” said George.

He said Fedusa welcomes the meeting with Social Development Minister Susan Shabangu today to discuss the possible solution to the dispute.

“Fedusa is aware that the strike will affect the most vulnerable members of society. We hope common sense will prevail and the parties can return to the negotiating table as soon as possible.”
