Metro states the duck park is not for the public

The dam is dirty, scattered with litter around the edges and fills the park with a foul smell.

The duck park next to the Leon Ferreira fire station on the corner of Trichardts and Edgar roads is a cause of frustration for the Boksburg residents.

“The condition of the park now is an absolute disgrace. The grass hasn’t been cut for at least six months and is waist-high. Both gates are lying on the ground.” said a ‘disgusted’ Boksburg resident.

Themba Gadebe, spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni metro, said this is not a formally developed park for public use.

“This open space serves as a storm water retention dam,” said Gadebe.

Although Boksburg residents make use of the park to walk their dogs and relax, the safety and maintenance of the park are increasingly becoming a concern.

The disgusted resident reached out to the metro on several occasions, asking for drastic measures to be taken to restore the park to its potential glory.

“It is council property, however, it does not fall under the parks department’s responsibilities as it is not a park,” explained Gadebe.

“The roads and storm water department is responsible for the removal of litter on the edge and inside of the water body. The parks department assist with grass cutting and maintenance of trees and litter picking,” said Gadebe.
