According to Ward 32 Clr Marius de Vos, he pursued the matter this morning (January 9) with engineers at the Department of Energy to find out the cause of the power outage.
“Apparently, from what I know at this stage, is that the cause of the power outage is the feeder cable, as it is weakened by cable theft, lack of maintenance and the ageing of equipment at the substation,” de Vos said.
“However, recent repairs at the substation in the south have resulted in smart load-shedding in the southern areas, including Parkrand and Sunward Park, over the past weekend.”
The councillor said the entire network needs an urgent overhaul to prevent these unplanned power interruptions.
“Residents have been affected by this power outage, because food is getting spoiled and criminals have also seen an opportunity to engage in illegal activities,” de Vos said.
According to Themba Gadebe, Ekurhuleni metro technicians are working around the clock replacing faulty medium voltage cables in the Boksburg area.
Affected areas include Parts of Plantation, Cason and Boksburg Central.
He said power supply is expected to be fully restored by 8pm.
