Petition for mayor to step down well received

Did I say that? Mayor Mzwandile Masina has denied saying he won't serve under a Ramaphosa presidency.

This is after mayor Mzwandile Masina promised that he would step down should Cyril Ramaphosa be elected as the new ANC president.

Alderman Shadow Shabangu, DA acting leader in Ekurhuleni, said since Ramaphosa was elected in December, Masina has been mum on the exact date he would resign.

“This despite the public outcry calling for Masina’s resignation to be accelerated, as many believe he has not only failed Ekurhuleni but his own political party,” Shabangu said.

“Although Masina has subsequently denied saying that he will not serve under a Ramaphosa presidency, the fact remains that he is no longer in political favour and certainly not the mayor that Ekurhuleni needs.

“More importantly, his denials point to his lack of personal integrity, the same integrity which he uses to ‘serve’ the people of Ekurhuleni and his own biased agenda which he uses to govern this metro.”

Following the election of Ramaphosa as ANC president, the DA launched a petition calling for Masina to step down as mayor, which, said Shabangu, has been well received by the public.

“This indicates the unhappiness of the people of Ekurhuleni with the incumbent mayor,” he said.

“The DA believes that the people of Ekurhuleni deserve a mayor with integrity and self-respect and someone they can trust.

“Masina has demonstrated that he is most definitely not this person and the DA will continue to put pressure on him to stay true to his word and do the right thing for the residents and step down as mayor.”
