So close yet so far for Parkdene bodybuilder Huxtable

Craig Huxtable.

The nationals were held at the Ridge Casino, in Emalahleni, on September 2.

The 33-year-old qualified for the nationals when he was crowned champion at the Ekurhuleni Provincial Championships, held in Bedfordview, earlier this year.

“It wasn’t the easiest thing to swallow,” he said of the elimination.

“The fact that you’ve gone so far and competing with your idols and then you hear that you didn’t make it. It hits you but at the same time humbles you. The judges’ critiques help you prepare better for the next show.

“I brought everything that I possibly could. It’s all about trial and error in this sport, tweaking this and that.

“I want to reach the international stage. There’s always more you can do and you can never be satisfied with just enough.”

Quizzed on what his biggest let-down at the competition was, Huxtable continued: “I was a bit disappointed in myself that I couldn’t show people the work my coach Victor Alley has done. I feel like I’ve failed him and haven’t done his good work justice.

“However, even though I didn’t manage to go the distance, my fellow Alleysway teammates did manage to put on a good performance.”

Not all was lost for the local athlete though, who added that he was already living his dream at the competition.

“This is the best condition I’ve built. People who know me couldn’t recognise me on stage until I smiled because I was the only one who was smiling.

“I always wanted to make SAs. I’ve worked so hard for it and when this year started, I said I was going to make it and I did. I’ve said that I’ll make it to internationals too and I will.

“The fact that I’m one of the top athletes in the country and posing amongst my idols was a bonus to me.”

Had he qualified, Huxtable would’ve booked his ticket to Spain where the world championships will be held in early November.
