Forty-nine cat lovers from as far afield as Durban and Bloemfontein put their felines on display.

These participants had attended various competitions to accumulate qualifying points for this final show.

The grand championship show (Cat of the Year) will take place in Pretoria on September 9.

On Saturday, categories included female/male Top Cat and female/male Top Kitten.

Boksburg High School learner Genevieve Bala and her Cornish Rex, Dreamcatcher, were the ultimate winners in the Kitten and Best Cat category.

Genevieve was also recently crowned the winner at a World of Cats and Dogs competition which took place in Sandton on July 16.

“I have been fascinated by cats from a young age. I understand them so much. I also have dogs at home so I’d say I am definitely an animal lover,” Genevieve said.

Her prizes included a trophy, a medal, a rosette and cat food.

A long standing exhibitor from Johannesburg, Charmaine Danziger, said she started entering her cat in competitions in 2002.

“I am very happy to have been named ‘longest exhibitor’ today. I love animals and am very passionate about cats – I have 25 at home!” Danziger said.

Audrey Kenny from the National Cat Society said: “The event was a success and we thank every exhibitor who took part in the show. The aim of these shows is to prepare for the Cat of the Year competition and also to rejuvenate a love for cats. We are looking forward to our next show to be held in April 2018.”

The National Cat Society also held a blanket drive and the donations will go to the Germiston SPCA.

Participants at the National Cat Society show included Candice Myerson who is holding her cat, Solo, and her son, Ayden who is holding Nikita and Gucci.
