Gender based violence under the microscope

South Africa commemorates Women’s Month in August as a tribute to the more than 20 000 women who marched to the Union Buildings on August 9, 1956 in protest against the extension of Pass Laws to women.

The report, which follows extensive social audit, is set to reveal shocking stats concerning the prevalence of gender based violence in Ekurhuleni.

According to the Member of the Mayoral Committee on Community Services, Dora Mlambo, the report will provide fundamental insight into the phenomenon of gender-based violence in the city and will also afford an opportunity to deal with the scourge from an informed position.

The research findings will further guide various stakeholders, including social crime units and Non-Government Organisations (NGO) such the People Opposed to Women Abuse (POWA).

Furthermore, MMC Mlambo will table the report to Ekurhuleni’s community structures to discuss it and develop ways to deal with gender based violence.
